Acknowledgements

I would very much like to thank every student and teacher whom I have ever known but given what this book is about that would be an absurdly long list that would include my pets, my children, and the designer of the chair on which I now sit. So, instead, and in the interest of manageability, I give thanks to all the participants in talks, lectures, seminars, social media, and other events in which I have discussed and developed the ideas presented in this book, without whom it would not have happened. Special thanks are due to my friends and collaborators, particularly Terry Anderson, whose incisive critiques, feedback, and ideas reverberate throughout the book and whose inspirational guidance has been invaluable from the start, and Gerald Ardito for long conversations and opportunities to challenge my arguments. I also acknowledge gratefully the assistance of Athabasca University, especially in giving me the President’s Award for Research and Scholarly Excellence, which provided me with the time needed to get this book started (back in 2013!), a fertile space in which to explore ideas, and colleagues at the top of their fields with whom to explore them. Most of all, though, this book would not have been possible without the love, support, and tolerance of my partner, Kestra, the love of my life and greatest inspiration in all that I do.
