The crushed rock mounts against the chain-link fence

The coils of barbed wire line the top rung.

After the camps, this wire by the rail in Newark

And on the brick fences in the colleges in Cambridge

Form lines that the Elizabethans might have misread.

Even pastorals are subject to history.

I dream with stones in my shoes.
