The pain bites

The rain slaps.

The crows

Sway in the wind

That turns leaves like memories.

Quiet you were, quiet you are

Choosing each word

like a pebble

The day overcast as you quote

Whitman here in New Haven

The ebullient poet who lifts

The frailty of flesh, lights

The mind with shimmering sound.
