The body text is set in Martina Plantijn designed by Klim Type Foundry. Select pages showcase a font called Black Cowboy Prototype, created by Bertrand Bickersteth. It is available for public download at bertrandbickersteth.com/font and will feature in a forthcoming collection of poetry. This font was developed from the designs of Black cowboys and ranchers from the late 19th- and early 20th-century. John Ware, Alberta’s famous Black cowboy, is impressed in every benign 9. David Mills, the Kainai Nation’s Afro-Indigenous ancestor, sends out DMs. Benjamin Washington, the displaced Barnardo ’boy, is the being in BW. These letters represent the impossible return of their Black braininess, their unpredicted designs on our minds. Long-ago-orphaned to history, these foundlings of the past now make up a foundry for the future. Despite appearances, the future never forgets. History is ever present, ever remarkable.
