26 Czar Nicholas I came to the Russian throne in the midst of the Decembrist Uprising of 1825, an anti-Czarist rebellion. Loyal troops suppressed the revolt and six months later, leaders of the conspiracy were executed while officers were sentenced to penal servitude in Siberia (Feinstein, Pushkin: A Biography, 138–39).
